What’s the Most reliable used AMERICAN car?

I’m getting a decent tax return this year and a vehicle is a must. I’m looking for the most reliable car, in terms of longevity and safety for my family. I’m looking in years from 1998 – 2005. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Again AMERICAN only, I support my Detroit automakers!

To tell you the truth, they are pretty good after the 2000 model year. Though I drove my 1988 Dodge Aries until 2008 when I gave it to an unemployed friend. And she is still driving it.

I have had good luck with my 2004 Focus and my 2005 Chevy Cavalier. The old Cavaliers were crappy but the 2003 and newer had all the bugs worked out and were good rides.

To make sure the car is made in the US/Canada free trade zone, look for a VIN starting with 1, 2 or 4.

These are made in Canada or the US. If it starts with a 3, the car was built in Mexico. If it starts with a letter it is an import. Some "American" cars are really imports.

Bout time I see somebody on here supporting Detroit and AMERICAN cars!! Nice work!! Maybe take a look at a later model Chevy Impala or even a Chevy Malibu. 2005 was also the first year for the Dodge Charger and Dodge Magnum, both have a lot of room and seem to be a good all around car. Good luck!

Define an "American" car. Most Fords, Chryslers, and GM cars are not made in the US anymore. You can look at the sticker and see how much of the car was made in the US. At a NASCAR race a few years ago one of the announcers pointed out the the only cars in the race that were mostly made in the US were the Toyotas.

All Dodge Challengers and Chargers are built in Ontario Canada.
All Ford Fusions are built in Hermosillo Mexico.

The list goes on and on.

My friend’s used Mitsubishi has been in the shop 5 times since he bought it.

I suggest a used Cadillac CTS(2006 model). They are now quite cheap and fun to drive.

    Chevy Prizm
    Pontiac Vibe

Only cause the Prizm is a rebadged Toyota Corolla and the Vibe is a rebadged Toyota Matrix.

American cars, especially Ford, are CRAP!!!!!!!
