Safety for breaking down on the highway?

My car broke down on the highway the other week. I pulled over to the side and put on my hazards. But what other safety tips can I use? Cars went by so fast and close that it shook my car every time. Is it safe to get out of the car? Do you stay in the car? What am I suppose to do while I wait for someone to come help me?

pull over far as you can
    get out of the car
go over the guard rail or far from the road as possible

if some one was to hit your car you would get hurt no matter wat so just get out and far from the car over a guard rail or concrete barrier or in the grass if possible if none of that is possible stay in the car.i would be better for you to get hit while in the car than standing nest to it.

Pull over as close to the shoulder as possible. Turn on your hazard lights. Carefully exit the vehicle and wait on the opposite side preferably behind the guard rail. Call for assistance from your cell phone and tell them the closest exit to where you are located. Never open the hood or trunk. The reason being is that you cannot see what is happening with your back turned or when you are in the process of opening the hood.

PS..Never accept any ride from anyone.

I would stay in the car and call for a tow truck. It’s never safe to exit the car unless there’s no traffic. It’s safer to exit from the passenger side as not to be close to traffic. I personally would stay in the car and call 911 to request for help. Even if you know about cars and want to take a look under the hood, that’s never safe with lots of cars going by.
